The CPM-MagnaCut is a powder metallurgy stainless steel with a high content of vanadium, molybdenum and niobium. It combines the properties of corrosion resistance, hardness, wear resistance, toughness, cutting edge stability and pressure cutting suitability like no other steel on the world market. 

The American metallurgist Larrin Thomas is a real institution in the international knifemaking scene. Under the name "Knifestelnerds" he has been doing basic metallurgical research at the highest level for many years. What is special, he carries out all investigations and research approaches explicitly from the perspective of the knife maker or for use as a knife. That alone is something special, because metallurgical research is usually carried out primarily for industrial production and these findings cannot necessarily be transferred to the very special requirements of a knife. 

Together with the American steel producer "Niagara Specialty Metals", Larrin Thomas has developed a steel into which he has incorporated all his findings from the past years of research. The result is nothing less than a small revolution! 

The basic rule in metallurgy is: if I optimize one aspect of performance, it comes at the expense of another. If I increase the hardness, for example, this comes at the expense of toughness. If I improve the corrosion resistance, this comes at the expense of hardness and edge retention. 

Of course, Larrin Thomas did not override this "law of nature". However, with the CMP-MagnaCut he has succeeded in creating a steel that combines outstanding properties like no other steel: 

- Very good corrosion resistance. 

- Very high achievable hardness for a corrosion-resistant steel (max. 65 hrc/recommended 62 hrc). 

- Extremely high edge retention. 

- Extremely good toughness and cutting edge stability. 

- Excellent suitability for the finest cutting edges and acute grinding angles (suitability for pressure cutting). 

There is currently no other steel on the world market that offers a comparable combination of outstanding properties.

I myself do not offer a hardening service for the steels I sell. However, I can unreservedly recommend the hardening service of my colleague Jürgen Schanz. He works with a very experienced hardening shop that also carries out demanding heat treatments exactly according to customer requirements. Besonderheiten/peculiarities:

The flat material is cut from the sheet metal with the laser cutter. Superficial oxidation and hardening can therefore occur at the cut edge. This structural change is only a few hundredths of a millimeter thick and can easily be ground off. The actual dimensions of the material can deviate by a maximum of 1% from the specified dimensions. This is related to the manufacturing tolerances of various suppliers.

Recommended heat treatment:

Forging: between 950 °C and 1150 °C

Soft anneal: Hold at 900°C for two hours, then controlled cool to 595°C at a maximum of 15°C per hour. remainder furnace cooling. Caution, be sure to protect against oxidation and decarburization.

Preheat: 845-870°C

Austenitizing: 1120 °C

Holding time: 20 min.

Quenching: Warm bath at 540 °C (recommended) or in a gas stream with at least 2 bar overpressure

Freezing: at least -70 °C

Tempering: 2 times for 2 hours at 175 °C with intermediate cooling to room temperature.

Achievable hardness: 62 hrc.
